-CWA 3404 Local President wins a seat on the Slidell, Louisiana City Council-

Shawn Jones, CWA Louisiana LPAT Coordinator through CWA LPAT training and lobbying state government at the Louisiana Legislature becomes inspired to run for public office to serve his community. Securing endorsements from the Northshore AFL-CIO CLC and NABTU Southeast Building Trades Council wins the May 16th election with 56% of the vote. Shawn has spent his entire career serving CWA members and now widens his serving nature to the public.

The Kentucky Derby Festival proudly recognizes our 2020 Volunteer of the Year.Carolyn Cain, for her exemplary years of service and unwavering dedication. The Festival simply wouldn’t be possible without Carolyn and the thousands of volunteers who make each event come to life. The Festival has been recognizing standout Volunteers since 1983. They are true champions of the Festival, bringing passion, energy, and a positive attitude, and always ready to take on whatever is needed.  

“There’s never a job she will not.” “Always smiling.” “Exceptional customer service.” “Always pleasant.” “Very dependable.” These are just a few of the many ways fellow volunteers and Festival staff describe Carolyn. Her connections to the Festival began tears ago when she attended events with her son. That experience inspired her to one day become part of the Festival family herself.

For nearly a decade. Carolyn has generously shared her time and talents across a range if events, including distributing water and medals at the Humana minimarathon and marathon, handing out t-shirt to runners at the Publix Super Markets Race Expo, Packet Pick Up, working the VIP are at Commonwealth Credit Union Winefest, and assisting with ticket entry at Republic Bank BourbonVille, to name a few. Even after relocating to Atlanta, she continues to return to Louisville each year to volunteer at Festival events. 

She says it’s the people, fellow volunteers, the community, and Festival staff that keep her coming back year after year. “It’s like a reunion! You get to see your volunteer family again and help the city shine!” 

When she’s not volunteering or working as a Benefits and Claim Facilitator at AT&T. Carolyn, a mom and “Auntie” enjoys spending time in her garden or cooking outdoors for family gatherings.

Standing Strong for a Fair First Contract

United in solidarity, TDS workers in Mooresville, North Carolina, are showing management that they are committed to winning a strong first contract. As part of their ongoing mobilization efforts, members proudly wore their red CWA lanyards and bracelets as they walked into their weekly meeting together—demonstrating that they are united and ready to stand up for the respect, wages, benefits, and workplace protections they deserve.

The bargaining committee—Carlos Cordero, FST–Network Specialist; Michael Perry, Senior Warehouse Technician; Matt Hurley, Executive Vice President of CWA Local 3603; and CWA Staff Representative Christina Ronk—has been bargaining with the company since April. Throughout the process, the members have remained engaged, visible, and committed to supporting their committee every step of the way.

By standing together, these workers are sending a clear message: they are united, they are determined, and they won't back down until they secure a fair first contract.
