Activists Rally Against VeriGreedy Verizon
A coalition of Locals from District 3 descended on Verizon's annual shareholders meeting on Thursday, May 3, protesting the company's excessive corporate greed and war against the middle class. Protesters from the 99 Percent Spring Coalition came from as far away as New Orleans and New York City to rally in front the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Ala.
Students from the University of Central Florida made the 11-hour bus trip from Orlando to join the fight, UCW-CWA members from the University of Tennessee, Jobs with Justice, the AFL-CIO, Central Labor Councils and the Greater Birmingham Ministries also lent their support, helping post VeriGreedy signs all along Interstate 565.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Booker Lester, Administrative Director, District 3 for his work in putting together the coalition of Locals from District 3 who attended and all the Locals and others who participated in this very important event. Verizon along with all the other companies we deal with need to know enough is enough – enough of the attacks on middles class jobs, enough of outsourcing good jobs to low wage workers. Verizon held the meeting in Huntsville, Alabama thinking this would prevent employees and protesters from attending. With the success of yesterday’s event, Verizon should know they cannot hide. We are fed up and ready to stand united against corporate greed.
