Union Push is About More Than Just Pay

https://mlk50.com/2025/12/03/union-push-is-about-more-than-pay-library-workers-say/

In September of 2025, members of Memphis Public Library Workers United (CWA local 3866) met with a journalist from MLK50: Justice Through Journalism. This interview opened up the internal workings of the library workplace, giving voice to what's on the line for library workers: the poor condition of our buildings, the lack of security, the median of pay which doesn't meet national standards, and the concrete, irreplaceable ways that library workers serve our communities and neighborhoods. On January 27th—because of articles like this one—the City Council will pass its third reading of a resolution for a ballot referendum which would change library workers' status to civil service through a majority vote. Thus, finally, a supermajority of library workers will be able to hold a union election.

“CWA 3174 is facing anti-union attacks from FL Windstream and we’re fighting back at the bargaining table and at our worksites. We’re organizing and mobilizing to stay CWA Strong!”

“Members from Local 3174 are letting Windstream know they are serious at the bargaining table. A mobile billboard displaying a variety of messages sits outside the Alachua Florida yard as workers come in for work.“
